Girl Reads Letters From Her Family After Being Hid Away For 17 Years, Her Reaction Is Priceless

On Abby Metre’s 18th birthday, she had been begging her parents for just one thing. It was something that many people her age wanted and “all of [her] friends had one.” An iPhone was all she could think about. Over and over and over again she begged. But when the day came, she was given something completely different than what she asked for.

A box. Her parents walked in her room with a box. But this was not just any old box. It was full of something that was going to change her life forever. She remembers sitting down on the living room floor with her dog, staring at this box. The box happened to be her great-great aunt’s jewelry box. It was over 100 years old.

She knew the box but had no idea what was inside. That is when her parents explained to her that the box was a kind of time capsule. It was full of things dating back to her 1st birthday in 1999. This came as a big surprise to her. Her entire family had added something in order to make this as special as possible.

In order to make this birthday as special as possible, everyone added a written note or story for her. This turned out to be one of the best birthdays she has ever had. So much went into this gift and it shows that this family is truly a family.

Her parents hid the box for over 17 years making sure that she never got a good look at it. She was overcome with emotion as she read the letters, some of which were from relatives that had passed on.

“I started crying. It was happiness. It wasn’t sadness at all,” she said. “This was sheer happiness that I got one more conversation with loved ones, one more ‘I love you,’ one more piece of advice.”

One letter was from her uncle John. He died in a car accident 3 years ago. This one hit her hardest.

“It was just a very visceral thing for me, and the moment I started reading it, I couldn’t handle it. It was like I was talking to him,” she said.

This is an amazing idea.
